You can select both desktop shortcut or the original execute file. This will open up the File Explorer and you can navigate and select the execute file (.exe) of your required app. In case your program isn’t listed there, then scroll down and click on Look for another app on this PC. When you’ll hit OK, the selected app will be set as default. Select the required app from the list, and check the checkbox next to Always use this app to open (X) files.
